Semiconductor device characterization above 100GHz for next generation wireless communications applications

Abstract: Today consumers are demanding that the existing wireless communication system are faster and have much lower levels of latencies while transporting not just voice but larger volumes of data. This growing demand for faster more complex wireless communication links that carry not only voice or data, are requiring that designers of the system components to utilize the sub-terahertz frequencies. With these smaller wavelengths in frequencies, it has become increasingly challenging to fully characterize these circuits using traditional methods. In addition, the traditional methods of transmission like waveguides are no longer practical, so there is an increased demand for designs to operate using wireless over the air as a transmission media. In this keynote we will look at some of the challenges when attempting to characterize these millimeter wave components using sub terahertz test equipment. The talk will look at a couple of the key examples of characterizing the performance of these complex devices. The talk will cover the on-wafer challenges and the different approaches to address these challenges. Also discussed in this talk are the challenges and demands placed on the test equipment being used for the device characterization.

Suren Singh received his BSEE from University of Durban-Westville, Durban South Africa in 1985. He completed a Graduate Diploma at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg South Africa in December 1992. He then went on to complete his MSEE at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1995. Suren has been with the Hewlett-Packard Company, Agilent Technologies and now Keysight Technologies since 1986. His experience includes application engineering, product design, manufacturing, and test process development for microwave hybrid microcircuits. He also held the position of an application specialist and system architect, focused on the terahertz measurement solutions for Keysight. In addition, he is responsible for the metrology products for performance network analyzers, including both calibration and verification as applied to both ambient and cryogenic temperatures. More recently Suren has been appointed as the technical lead for the emerging technologies for Quantum and 6G focused on the aerospace industry. More recently Suren has been involved in the development of solutions for cryogenic component testing for the Quantum based systems. He is currently working closely with the industry leaders in millimeter wave space to bring to market solutions focused on 6G component characterization.
